This is the Cross family bible with the endpapers and the first page of the new testament filled with Cross family birth records from 1810 to 1852. Included is a Certificate of Naturalization for Shadrach Cross a Native of Wales from the Pittsburgh Court dated 1860.

First edition. In four volumes. Contemporary gilt-tooled tree-calf, contrasting dark green morocco lettering-pieces, marbled edges, marbled endpapers. A trifle rubbed. Leaves O1 and S3 of Vol. II detached, lower corner of leaf 3F5 of Vol. II torn away, with slight loss of text and sense, very occasional light spotting. The magnum opus of Welsh Calvinistic Methodist minister James Hughes [Iago Trichrug] (1779-1844), a monumental, immensely detailed, commentary on the Old Testament up to the Book of Isaiah. A fifth and final volume, presumably extending from the Book of Jeremiah to Malachi, was published posthumously in 1848. Size: 12mo.

Full-Leather Worn. Condition: Vg for Age. Peter Williams Bible LEATHER. 4to, full orig. leather, worn & joints splitting, but with 10 brass studs. Bible with brief commentary at the end of each chapter, prepared by Peter Williams, a Calvinistic Methodist and famous itinerant preacher. Printed by John Ross of Carmarthen, a Scot who had learnt Welsh. This is the first reprint 1779-81, lacking first section, starts at section b with parts of a Welsh Prayer Book (39 articles, Catechism, chronology, Kalendar), Old Testament and 1781 New Testament complete (no Apocrypha), text in two columns,+ 1779 Welsh Edmund Price metrical Psalter up to Ps.96, rest missing; minor tears and imperfections, rather fingermarked, but overall a good copy of a rare early edition of this Bible with commentary though deficient at either end but not affecting any of the main Bible text. 8vo, pp. [116], [1048], [40] + 2 folding maps. Contemporary panelled calf, spine divided by raised bands, edges sprinkled red. A little toned, some scattered foxing. Rubbed and a little worn, foot of spine defective, leather peeling. This edition of the bible in Welsh, here with prayerbook and psalms, was issued by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge under the editorship of Moses Williams. The first sheets were finished by November 1715, although the whole was not published until May 1718; some printings, as with the Psalms here, bear a printed date of 1717. This copy also contains an Apocrypha, not found in all copies, and a scripture index not called for by ESTC (an issue without both of these was also available for nonconformists). This edition also contains the two maps of the Holy Land, which per Darlow and Moule were only included in 4000 of the 10000 copies produced, ?perhaps the subscribers? copies? Darlow & Moule 9595; ESTC T125812; T126074; T125814.
