Colish, the Meriden Gravure Company, and the Arthur Jaffe Heliochrome Company, on paper made specially for this edition. The Shahnameh, written by the poet Firdowsi in the 11th century, is considered the Persian national epic. This manuscript, with illuminations by the most famous artists of the period, was completed in the 1530s by direction of Shah Tamasp. With 21 color facsimile plates in Volume I, another in Volume II, and 269 sepia collotype plates in Volume II. The printed text, by Dickson and Welsh, gives a thorough account of the book, its contents, its creation, the individual artists, and the history surrounding it. Internally immaculate, in blue cloth covers with gilt decoration. A.e.g. A few minor scratches to cover, and a smudge to one preliminary page. A presentation inscription in calligraphy to a member of the Fogg Museum staff is on the half-title of Volume I. Lacking slipcase.
