Mass market paperback. Condition: Good. First Ace printing [stated]. The format is approximately 4.25 inches by 7 inches. 157, [1] pages. Decorative front cover. The cover has some wear and soiling. Kurt Mahr was the pen name of Klaus Mahn (Klaus Otto Mahn), a German science fiction writer famous for his contributions to the Perry Rhodan franchise. Guest Editorial by James Russell III. The first 126 novels (plus five novels of the spinoff series Atlan) were translated into English and published by Ace Books between 1969 and 1978, with the same translations used for the British edition published by Futura Publications which issued only 39 novels. When Ace canceled its translation of the series, translator Wendayne Ackerman self-published the following 19 novels (under the business name 'Master Publications') and made them available by subscription only. Disputes with the German publishers led to the cancellation of the American translation in 1979. Perry Rhodan is a German space opera franchise, named after its hero. It commenced in 1961 and has been ongoing for decades, written by an ever-changing team of authors. It is perhaps the most successful science fiction book series ever written. The series has spun off into comic books, audio dramas, video games and the like. A reboot, Perry Rhodan NEO, was launched in 2011 and began publication in English in April 2021. Derived from a 2005 review found on-line and posted by Bruce Gray: While book # 23 of this Space Opera is a stand alone story, it also continues the first huge story arc, which began in book # 21 "The Cosmic Decoy", and concludes in Book # 41, "The Earth Dies". These mega-stories are called "bands" in the original German. This band deals with the first true encounter between the fledgling fleet of Terra and the might of the galactic empire. Cadet Tifflor, who escaped from the Springers in "episode" # 22, now faces even more peril. Rhodan sends the mouse-beaver, Pucky, to "Snowball" - the icy planet where Tifflor and what remains of his crew are awaiting rescue. Pucky has his usual brand of 'fun' with the Springer ships looking for Tifflor - with the expected result of the Springers moving away from the ice bound world. Tifflor and his band of mostly cadets of the Space Academy must remain behind on Snowball as a sort of rear guard. Pucky remains behind as well, just in case the Springers get the bright idea to return while the Terranian fleet is off on another mission. Rhodan learns why the Springer agents are undetectable to his Mutant Corps - they are robots! This book contains another editorial, another science fiction movie section, and another letters column. There are also extra stories - one continuing adventure, similar to a serial, and some "Shock Shorts" - continuing a series of SF short stories at the end of each book. Although these stories have nothing to do with Perry Rhodan, they are worth looking at.

Mass market paperback. Condition: Good. George Barr (illustrator). First Printing [Stated]. 158, [2] pages. Illustrated front cover. Illustrations. Some page discoloration noted. Never before in Paperback [stated on cover]. Translated from the French. Pierre Barbet (16 May 1925 20 July 1995) was the main pseudonym used by French science fiction writer and pharmacist Claude Avice. Claude Avice also used the pseudonyms of Olivier Sprigel and David Maine. Several of his novels were translated into English and published by DAW Books. Barbet was among the first writers to introduce heroic fantasy to Anticipation as part of his Temporal Investigator Setni series, which started with L'Exilé du Temps [The Exile of Time] (1969). Setni was a special agent for a Galactic Federation ruled by preserved brains. Barbet followed suit with À Quoi Songent les Psyborgs? [What Do Psyborgs Dream About?] (1971), in which Setni explores a planet where a trio of powerful, disembodied brains have recreated the fantasy legends of Amadis of Gaul for their own entertainment. He continued to use this theme with La Planète Enchantée and Vénusine, the latter written under the pseudonym Olivier Sprigel. He also wrote an alternate history, L'Empire du Baphomet [The Empire of Baphomet] (1972), in which an alien attempts to manipulate the Knights Templar to assume control of the world during the Crusades, and a sequel, Croisade Stellaire [Stellar Crusade] (1974), in which the Templars go into space to conquer Baphomet's people and convert them to Christianity. These two books were translated later into English as Baphomet's Meteor and Stellar Crusade, and published together as Cosmic Crusaders. George Edward Barr (January 30, 1937 April 19, 2025) was an American science fiction and fantasy artist. In 1959, at age 22, Barr sent a painting to Ziff Davis that he thought might make a good cover, but received a reply from Ciel Goldsmith at the publishing house that changes would have to be made. Barr took this as a rejection, but when Goldsmith saw another of his paintings at a local science fiction convention, she explained that that she was willing to buy both paintings if a few changes could be made. Barr made the changes, and both were used as covers for Fantastic Stories. For several years, Barr displayed and sold his artwork at regional science fiction conventions and at the annual World Science Fiction Convention. Barr eventually supplied both cover art and interior art to Ballantine Books, Ace Books, Leisure Books, Newcastle Books, Forgotten Fantasies, DAW Books, Asimov's Science Fiction, Amazing Stories, Pulphouse Publishing, Donald M. Grant, UnderwoodMiller, Alyson Books, Strawberry Hill Books, Arbor House, Weird Tales and TSR. The latter included 1987's Dragonlance Adventures, the Dungeon Master's Design Kit, and several books in the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Adventure Gamebooks line. In 1997, Marion Zimmer Bradley's Fantasy Magazine noted that Barr had contributed artwork to all but six of its first 34 issues. Barr was invited to be the guest of honor at eleven science fiction conventions. When he was honored as Professional Artist Guest of Honor at the 1994 World Science Fiction Convention in Winnipeg, Barr became the first person to be invited to Worldcon as a both Fan Guest of Honor (1976) and Professional Guest of Honor (1994). Captain Setni, of all the officers of space, was the most immune to hypnotic suggestion and psychological delusions. Hence, when reports reached the Great Brains of a strange new planet in the Hydra group, Senti was the logical astronaut to check it out. Because by all account the planet seemed a double of Old earth--but of Earth as it had been in the far past--and legendary beings were alive and well there. Setni was specially trained for the task, but even the best training in disbelief was not sufficient. Fro on that pseudo-Earth, not only Was Charlemagne in power and knighthood in flower, but the pagan gods were visible, physically real, and devilishly active. Setni knew it was no illusion--but then what w.
