Por esta razón, no se ocupa tanto de una determinada creencia, sino más bien d…e ciertos fenómenos o circunstancias que acarrea consigo el 'modernismo' y que han incidido sobre las actitudes de las diferentes religiones del mundo.\nPor 'modernismo' se entiende la serie de actitudes mentales, consecuencia de nuevas formas de vida, que han llevado a las sociedades a la aceptación del cambio como algo común y corriente en la vida diaria y, por ende, en el devenir histórico y en el desarrollo de las sociedades. Esto, por supuesto, choca con las ideas religiosas tradicionales, cuyos sostenedores tienden a afirmar que su forma de expresión y de organización es la original, lo que los lleva a negar el cambio histórico, o a presentarse como corrientes reivindicatorias. En las religiones de hoy en día se pueden observar ambas corrientes, con la característica, además, de que la 'modernista' supone, generalmente, que ocurrió un cambio negativo previo (corrupción, degeneración, alejamiento de las normas originales), y se presenta como un movimiento reformista que busca retornar a la verdad original y pura.\nEl autor sostiene que la evolución actual de las religiones no puede ser comprendida si no se toma en cuenta la influencia que sobre ellas ha tenido el desarrollo occidental. Con lo anterior no quiere decir que hay una superioridad inherente de Occidente, sino simplemente que este último generó e inició el proceso. Esto incluso en el caso del Islam moderno, que tiene una actitud ambivalente ante el 'modernismo', debido a los orígenes occidentales de este último.\nEl profesor Werblowsky es catedrático de la Universidad Hebrea de Jerusalén y ampliamente conocido por sus estudios sobre las religiones, que han sido traducidos a diferentes idiomas.
