Ein erheblicher Teil des Aufwands, den die Rechnerhersteller in die Softwar…e stecken, wird hnmer dazu verwendet, ein Betriebssystem zu erstel len. Jeder neu entwickelte Rechner muB zunachst durch ein Betriebssystem be dienbar gemacht werden, bevor man an Anwendungslosungen denken kann. Jeder Rechnerhersteller steht bei jeder neuen Rechnerfamilie vor diesem Aufwand. Aber auch die Anwender-Software muB, da sie ja mehr oder weniger an ein bestimmtes Betriebssystem oder eine Betriebssystemfamilie gebunden ist, fast jedesmal neu entwickelt oder zumindest mit erheblichem Aufwand angepaBt werden. Diese Vor gehensweise stellt, wirtschaftlich betrachtet, eine kaum vertretbare Verschwen dung wertvoller Ressourcen dar. Hinzu kommt, daB wegen des Preisverfalls der Rechner-Hardware die Kosten fur die Entwicklung neuer Betriebssysteme kaum noch in vertretbaren Grenzen, bezogen auf den Gesamtentwicklungsaufwand, ge halten werden konnen. Damit aber ist der Nahrboden fur die Herausbildung von Betriebssystemstandards geschaffen. Das 1969 in den Bell Laboratorien entwickelte und von AT&T in Lizenz vertriebe ne Betriebssystem UNIX bietet erstmals weltweit eine fUr viele Anwendungen einheitliche Basis, und dies fUr praktisch alle Rechner, besonders fur Arbeitsplatz rechner, die fur professionelle Anwendungen einsetzbar sind. Arbeitsplatzrechner ubersteigen ublicherweise die Leistungen einfacher Personal Computer. Der Einsatz von UNIX bedeutet fur die Hersteller eine Entlastung des Software Entwicklungsaufwandes, die kaum hoch genug eingeschatzt werden kann. Die Kosten fur die Entwicklung des Betriebssystems entfallen ganz und werden durch vergleichsweise geringe Lizenzgebuhren ersetzt.
