The six articles in this volume discuss static and dynamic aspects of the spatial grammars of Ancient to Medieval Greek, Akkadian, Hittite, and Hieroglyphic Ancient Egyptian, as well as field data on eight modern languages (Arabic, Hebrew, English, German, Russian, French, Italian, and Spanish). Among the grams discussed are spatial particles, motion verbs, case and, most prominently, spatial prepositions. All ancient language data are fully explained in linguistic word-by-word glosses and are therefore accessible to scholars who are not themselves experts on the respective languages. Taken together, these contributions extend the scope of research on spatial grammar back to the third millennium BCE.

Hardcover. Condition: As New. [Egyptology] Hardcover. Teil I & II. German text. Good binding and cover. Light wear. Faint sticker residue on rear board. Clean, unmarked pages. This is an oversized or heavy book, which requires additional postage for international delivery outside the US. The Cave Book is a large, ancient Egyptian afterlife cosmography of the 13th century BC. In a form comparable to a comic, it describes the "knowledge" of the Egyptian theologians about the underworld and the actions of the sun god who permeated it Bodies of Re and Osiris and the mystery of their regeneration. The cave book is of particular importance on several levels: while it occupies an important place in media history as an early example of a narrative sequence of text and images, and as a linguistic artifact it represents ancient evidence of the usual theological practice of imitating an older form of language (cf. Ecclesiastical Latin), as a theological work it sheds light on the intellectual history of the south-eastern Mediterranean region in the late 2nd millennium BC. Daniel A. Werning's two-volume critical edition traces the nine-century tradition of the witnesses to the text and, with the help of textual criticism, reconstructs the original text and scenes.
