This book examines the origins, tenets, evolution, and dissemination of Stoicism, a philosophical school founded by Zeno of Citium in the 3rd century BCE. The author traces Stoicism's roots in earlier Greek philosophy, particularly the teachings of Socrates, and explores how it developed in response to the social and intellectual climate of its time. The book discusses the three main Stoic disciplines: logic, physics, and ethics. In considering Stoic ethics, the author analyzes the school's emphasis on virtue, duty, and living in harmony with nature. The book also examines the role of Stoicism in Roman society and its influence on later philosophical and religious thought, including Christianity. Overall, this book provides a comprehensive and engaging account of Stoicism's contributions to Western philosophy and its enduring relevance to questions of morality, ethics, and the pursuit of happiness. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Phyllomedusa lemur is a leaf frog occurring in lower montane rain forests of Costa Rica and Panama. Only one locality is as low as 140 m a. s. l. Captive specimens from For- tuna, Panama, produced three types of vocalizations: a one- note advertisement call, an encounter call consisting of three to four notes emitted in close proximity to another male or after another male's advertisement call, and a release call consisting of several notes. Aggressive behaviour of males consisted of clasping other males and non-receptive females and trying to make them drop off the perch. Four pairs depo- sited 72, 46, 43 and 30 eggs in 3, 2, 2 and 1 clutch, respectively. Clutches were deposited on leaves and the frogs made no attempts to wrap the leaves around them. Eggs hatched after 7 to 14 days (mean, 9.4, n =27 at 24 °C). Eggs covered by other eggs were retarded in development and often died. Metamorphosis was completed after 69 to 98 (mean, 81.5) days at SVL of 21.5-24 (mean. 22.8) mm. Under natural conditions, freshly metamorphosed froglets are larger (25-27 mm). Males developed weak nuptial pads after seven months. The reproductive biology of Phyllomedusa lemur (and other species of the P. buckleyi group) differs significantly from that of other Phyllomedusa species. Egg clutches are not wrapped in leaves and do not contain small empty egg cap- sules surrounding the other eggs. Vocalizations are less complex. In these respects, P. Iemur resembles the Agalychnis species. Perhaps, because of several morphological differences between Agalychnis and the P. buckleyi group, this latter group should be given generic rank. 8 pp., 16 figs, 4.
