Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 30 cm. ix, 222 p. An intesting inscription on the front free end paper: "Christmas, 1997. to my Friend Wendy (former Minnesota Governor Wendell Anderson) from the father of the author.". The elder Whitney was a successful businessman and twice ran as a Republican for office in Minnesota, losing to Eugene McCarthy in a Senate race in 1964 and losing again in the Gubernatorial election in 1982 to Rudy Perpich. The book looks perfect, but the lower corner of the text block has experienced some moisture and has rippled most of the pages about two inches out from the spine.

Hardcover. Green cloth boards with gilt lettering; color illustration dj, mylar cover; ix, 222 pp; illustrated in bw and color. "A painter of outstanding originality who was considered one of the founders of the French Romantic School, Theodore Gericault left Paris in late 1816, at the age of twenty-five, and spent the next year in Italy, making an extraordinary series of works in a variety of media. This beautiful book studies the work produced by Gericault during this year and assesses the importance of the trip for the rest of his career. The book discusses and reproduces almost every painting and drawing done by Gericault during this period: his copies after the antique and earlier masters; his works on themes of contemporary Italian genre (an interest that made him almost unique among French artists of the period); the works on mythological and erotic themes; and his paramount Italian project - the series of works on the annual race of riderless horses down the Roman Corso, which have been organized here for the first time to illustrate fully the project's gradual development from the depiction of a scene Gericault actually observed into a timeless if essentially classical image of heroic struggle. The book sheds light not only on a hitherto unexamined period of Gericault's life but also on the efforts of a key figure in a transitional period of French art to come to grips with the classical and neoclassical past while embracing the new century's passions for the exotic and the real."- DJ. VG/VG (Ex-library with stamps and labels on spine, inside front and rear covers, ffep and block.).

Audio Book (Cassette). Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 48 pp. with full-colour illlustrations. Very slight edgewear. Winter, 2013, Volume LXX, Number 3 issue of the Metropolitan Museum of Art Bulletin. "Through exhibitions and publications, [Wheelock] Whitney played a key part in nurturing a broader interest in painting of the French school between 1785 and 1850. The basic strategy was simple: to unearth informal sketches and studies of aesthetic merit that artists typically squirreled away in their ateliers and to place them before the eyes of the public, often for the first time since they were painted. Because the majority of the painters were greatly admired in their day but had been overshadowed by subsequent artistic trends, finished paintings by these long-neglected artists were also added to the mix." - Asher Ethan Miller. Painters featured include Simon Denis, Auguste-Hyacinthe Debay, Louis Stanisla Marin-Lavigne, Jules Coignet, Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes, Jean-Victor Bertin, Claude Lorrain, Joseph Bidauld, Theodore Rousseau, Alexandre-Hyacinthe Dunouy, Hubert Robert, Joseph Vernet, François-Marius Granet, Vincent van Gogh, Franz Ludwig Catel, Léopold Robert, Léon Palliere, Achille-Etna Michallon, Léon Cogniet, Claude Bonnefond, Jean-François Montessuy, Jean-Auguste Dominique Ingres, François-Édouard Picot, Jean Alaux, Paul Flandrin, Henri Lehmann, Charles Remond, Guiseppe Valadièr, André Giroux, François Diday, and Camille Corot.
