The recipient of this copy, Tom Hayden (1939-2016), was an anti-war and pro-civil rights activist. Hayden led protests at the 1968 Democratic National Convention and stood trial during the "Chicago Seven" case. He was elected to the California State Assembly from 1982-1992, and then the California Senate from 1992-2000. Signed.

Corners worn, board showing slightly at tips, marbled paper darkened along edges, a few small pieces of marbled paper missing, bookseller's tiny label, reference library bookplate presented by Mrs Miles in memory of her husband Col. Samuel Barrette Miles in 1920, author of "THE COUNTRIES AND TRIBES OF THE PERSIAN GULF" and neat ink library numbers on front pastedown, small unobtrusive blind library stamp to title page, 3 text pages and to each plate, slight faint foxing to margins of plates, pages next to plates faintly browned, very slight faint foxing to 3 images, contents otherwise bright and clean, binding tight and firm. A very good copy. Joseph White (1745-1814), orientalist and theologian has inscribed the title page at the top: 'J. Newell from the Author'. Signed in pencil by the artist and titled "From the South Portico of the White House." This work shows the "The Washington Monument" in Washington, D.C. Cream white matte, museum glass, frame measures 9.5" x 13". Signed and dated along the lower corner by President Herbert Hoover and First Lady Lou Hoover. The 1931 holiday gift from President and Mrs. Herbert Hoover to members of the White House staff were etchings by Joseph C. Claghorn. The three variants of etchings include: The Washington Monument, the Arlington Memorial Amphitheater, and Mount Vernon. All were framed and matted before distribution to the staff. All were signed by the artist, President Hoover, and Mrs. Hoover. Signed.
