Papierbedingt gebräunt. - Deviance from the norms of social behaviour is commonly seen as badness, sometimes as madness, and frequently as a perplexing combination of both. It is with the intermediate category, where badness and madness seem entangled, that this book is concerned, presenting as it does the experiences of three men who, from entirely different viewpoints, share the common aim of seeking to understand and meet the hidden demands of the deviant. Stuart Whiteley, with an orthodox psychiatric background, describes one approach to social deviance at the Henderson Hospital, and the evolution of the therapeutic community method of treatment with particular reference to the young deviants, so often called psychopaths in medical terminology. Dennie Briggs looks at the ways the penal system has tackled deviance and describes the development of a therapeutic community approach at a prison in California. And Merfyn Turner writes about the general community and the inadequate attempts that have been made to accommodate deviants in hostels and institutions. He then describes the more purposive approach at Norman House for the rehabilitation of discharged prisoners, and the spread of this approach into wider fields. Whether considered from the hospital ward, the prison cell, the probation office or the social work agency, the dilemma is the same : to which end of the penal-medical spectrum should the deviant individual be directed, and how if at all could a regime be structured to meet his needs ? In a final chapter the authors highlight the problems as well as the potential of each approach, with the aim of putting forward an integrated and linked system to promote personality growth and emotional stability in individuals who are in conflict with society. Thus the book challenges society to make a fundamental change in its attitude to deviants. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.
