Hard Covers. Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: VG+. 1st. The waters off the shores of Papua/New Guinea are a Mecca for divers, most notably for the perfusion of opportunities for exploring the numerous wrecks of cargo ships, warships, landing craftr, a submarine, aircraft and various other relics of war -- Japanese and Allied-- virtually littering the seabed, with some in shallows, at times leaving them exposed. The author was introduced to scuba diving in the1970s, trained on the Banks Peninsula on NZ's South Island and qualified in the sport in 1978. In 1980 , with his family, he moved to Port Moresby in Papua/New Guinea where he quickly became prominant in active diving and scuba club activities. Later, he skippered the club's dive boat, or acted as divemaster, while exploring the Port Moresby coast and locating dive sites. By 1987 he had purchased his own boat and searched for undiscovered wrecks and relics. His book had its origins in what he describes as ".a few loose sheets providing transients for popular dive locations and a short description of each location." However, collecting marine artifacts, sea-shells and photography (above and below water level) were among his other interests and when, along with his own and others' diving experiences, these were included when his few "loose sheets" expanded into this fine volume. Other topics in it are a section containing information for tourists/vistors, while Port Moresby's diving history, including the hard hat, pearl seeking, operations dating from the 1850s occupies an extended and informative chapter. Details on the various diving sites, and objects of major interest, are provided in a series of 21 Locale chapters which, in addition to war material, take in a number of peace-time shipwrecks or sinkings and always adding snippits from WWII, other historical events, natural history of the territory and its native people. While primarily a "guide to scuba divers", Neil Whiting's book will provide the casual reader with a great deal of knowledge about Papua/New Guinea not to be found elsewhere. First edition of 1994 by Robert Brown and Assaociates, 264 pages including bibliography. Lavishly illustrated throughout with colour and b/w contemporary and historic photos including marine-life and on-shore shots, the title is on a double page colour underwater view, end-papers show a silhouette ship against a cloudy background. A feature of the book is its excellent maps which include numerous colour tone "Locales" detailing a variety of wreck and diving sites, a street double page street plan of Port Morseby's business district plus another of the Port's wrecks, reefs and diving sites, also a number of detailed maps site maps with coastal view profiles showing distinctive recognition points, these detailed maps are expertly prepared with colour differential tonings, more general maps, showing larger areas, are usually two-tone. The laminated colour pictorial covers are VG+, internally excellent, no inscfriptions. The dust jacket is identical to the laminated covers and is VG+. Weight of this large book is just over 1.3 kg unpacked and would probably require additional postage for international delivery. Photos, Maps, Coastal View Profiles, Diagrams, Document reproductionsn (illustrator).…

Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. First Print signed by Rem Koolhaas on the title page without inscription. Illustrated throughout with color photographs and drawings. Very Near-Fine condition, the only defects being that the upper left corner of the back cover is very slightly bumped and there is just a smidgen of wear along the bottom edge of the front cover. "What is OMA provides a clear insight into the role and significance of Rem Koolhaas and the Office for Metropolitan Architecture. Authors of international repute from beyond the province of architecture examine OMA's works in the light of social and economic developments. The many facets of Koolhaas come under review: his take on architectural theory and the conceptual apparatus he employs, his vision of urbanism and the contemporary city, the designs put into practice by OMA and the research projects of the AMO think tank, which exist outside the immediate boundaries of architecture. This book paints an intelligent picture of the sheer range of OMA's architecture and of Koolhaas's seminal role in the architectural world." - NAi Publishers (Note: Photos may show magnified dust, a flash reflection, or color washout.)
