CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Light soiling and rubbing, front cover lightly stained. Page 13 with former owner's inked stamp, else pages are clean and tight. Now with clear…mylar wrapper. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: The Hawkins Zouaves, were originally a military club founded by Rush C. Hawkins in New York City. When war broke out, they mustered in as the 9th New York on April 23, 1861, in New York City. The 9th wore a unique version of the Zouave uniform created by the famous Brooks Brothers; a dark blue coat, vest, and chasseur style trousers with red scrollwork and piping, white gaiters around their boots, a red sash wrapped around their waist held in place by an ordnance belt buckle and atop their heads a red fez with a blue tassel. The author was a Sergeant in Company B. A New York native, he enlisted as a private at New York City on April 23, 1861, and mustered into the 9th New York on May 4. The Hawkins Zouaves, led by Colonel Hawkins from 1861-63, formed the nucleus of the 9th and gained a reputation as a fighting regiment. Whitney fought in Virginia at Big Bethel and Newport News, and at Hatteras, North Carolina, with Burnside's expedition. He was also at Roanoke Island, Winton and Camden, North Carolina, and at South Mountain, Maryland. At the Battle of Antietam, Maryland, on September 17, 1862, Whitney was wounded in the abdomen, a permanent disability that kept him confined to bed for most of the next 10 years. REFERENCES: DORN NY 217; COULTER 474: "Whitney gives considerable attention to the people of the Confederacy, finding those on Roanoke Island woefully ignorant, and the inhabitants generally less intelligent than New Yorkers. He admits that his troops were first-class pillagers of the countryside. Whitney makes no mention of a diary but there was little lapse of time to affect his memory. It is, however, a biased account by one who refused to find anything commendable in the Confederacy." NEVINS I pg 177: "A bitter account, principally of the Roanoke Island campaign; the author relied primarily on memory.".
