The text provides descriptions of each of the 23 views, with the views keyed to the 2 maps. The author writes in the Preface: "A week (the least I could, the most I cared to stay there) was most happily spent in taking notes for private use, in making rough sketches of points that struck the fancy, and in thinking of the pleasant evenings at home, which gave to these outlines, even in expectation, a value not their own .
