Tirage à part très rare de ce texte pionnier. ONE OF THE EARLIEST SCIENTIFIC TEXT ON RADIUM THERAPY (BRACHYTHERAPY). Louis Wickham (1861-1913), après avoir été chef de clinique à l'Hôpital Saint-Louis, devint médecin de l'Hôpital Saint-Lazare. Il laissa son nom au réseau observé dans le lichen plan (réseau ou stries de Wickham). En 1905, il s'intéressa à la radium-thérapie et participa à la Fondation du Laboratoire biologique du radium, devenant l'un des pionniers de l'utilisation thérapeutique du radium. Cette monographie est divisée en trois parties : Observations antérieures ; Questions des mesures ; Recherches personnelles. Wickham résume les observations antérieures dont un grand nombre manquait de rigueur scientifique, comportant peu ou pas d'indications sur le mode opératoire, et toutes étaient faites par application de tubes ou d'appareils à écran contenant le sel de radium ; aucun résultat net et bien précis n'avait encore été signalé à l'actif de la radioactivité induite, et des diverses substances radifères destinées à véhiculer les rayonnements dans l'économie. Wickham aborde ensuite les questions des mesures et décrit l'électroscope que Danne avait présenté la même année au Congrès de Milan, permettant de connaître la dose réelle utilisée. Le dernier et le plus important chapitre est consacré aux recherches personnelles de l'auteur. Wickham reconnaît que "ce n'est pas sans une certaine défiance" qu'il a abordé, environ deux ans auparavant l'étude thérapeutique du radium. Il écrit : "Nos premiers essais ont été timides et rares, ayant le souci d'éviter la radiodermite et de limiter l'emploi du radium aux cas où il apparaissait que d'autres traitements ne seraient pas sensiblement meilleurs. Ils ont été pratiqués d'abord sur nous-même, sur la peau de cobayes, puis sur quelques lésions cutanées. Peu à peu nous avons étendu notre champ d'action." Wickham expose le matériel et les méthode (instrumentation, mode opératoire) utilisés, ainsi que les résultats.
