The stimulus for undertaking the production of this book was a shared enthusiastic interest in, the various aspects of the Postal reforms, which were campaigned and planned for in the 1830's and resulted in very significant changes in the operation of the British Post Office following the introduction…of Uniform Penny Postage on the 10th January 1840 The primary objective in preparing this book has been to set the context of the 1840 Wyon-Whiting essays within the aims of the reforms being introduced in 1840 for the pre-payment of postage, and their ultimate destiny to retrieve the unsatisfactory reception given to the Mulready postal stationery in May 1840. The 1841 embossed envelopes where a world first, and provided a design concept which served the British Post Office for over 130 years, and was also adapted by many other countries.

The broadside reports the maritime commerce of the day in 5 primary categories: "London Imported, March 22, 1802" with locations, company & good received (e.g., "New York Wm Rowlett and Co. 7000lb tobacco . 10000lb cotton"); "Ships Entered Inwards" naming the ship…, captain & port (e.g., Sophia, J. Smith . Rouen); "Goods Exported, March 22" listing destination, company & goods (e.g., "Virginia Smith and Son certain cotton & silk hose at l300"); "Goods Exported by Certificate." listing destination, company & goods (e.g., "Quebec Fellows and Co 71c linen, 400l thread, 3160l pepper, 1529 tomals[?]"); and "Ships Cleared Outwards" showing ship, captain & destination (e.g., Juliana, R. Branch . New York"). A concluding note advises "Such GENTLEMEN as are desirous of taking the BILL OF ENTRY, are desired to apply to Mr. R. Seymour or Mr. P. Wick, in the Long Room at the Custom House." Overall, a VG+ lot of very scarce early 19th C. customs documents. Light extremity wear. Faint horizontal fold line. Short ink annotation on verso, dated 1809. Now housed in a clear archival mylar sleeve.
