Count Wilczek co-sponsored the Austro-Hungarian North Pole Expedition of 1872-4 under Julius Payer and Karl Weyprecht, and himself joined the expedition support ship Isbjörn. He later in 1882 funded the establishment of an Austrian station on Jan Mayen as part of an international programme, visiting the island himself aboard the Pola. Wilczek devotes a long chapter to 'My Polar Expeditions', as well as another to his hunting adventures which includes a polar bear hunt on Novaya Zemlya.
