Interest in what takes place in group psychotherapy is no longer limited to professionals engaged in psychiatric practice. Highly diverse possibilities of self-discovery within many kinds of groups have been widely publicized. Many people now believe that group psychotherapy offers solutions for personal difficulties, while others turn to it simply for improvement of needed skills. Reports of excesses in encounter groups is but one aspect of social experimentation. Some few psychiatrists have unfortunately taken the view that individual psychosis may represent a reaction against a sick world. In this era of social experimentation, deviation in the individual may be used as evidence of an advanced state of awareness, while unacceptable community attitudes are attributed to the ills of society, and there are elements of truth present. The author says that medical practitioners should not be misled into advising deviant or unstable patients to participate in groups led by self-styled human relations experts. The leaders of these groups sometimes lack knowledge necessary to screen high-risk patients or know how to deal with them once they join one of the groups. Experience in analytic groups helps greatly to clarify, and to warn of group therapy limitations and perils. These are some of the considerations in this book.
