An das Gymnasium war eine Realschule angegliedert. Das Gymnasium war aus einer bereits um 1235 gegründeten, später auch als Ratslyzeum oder als Große Ratsschule bezeichneten Lateinschule hervorgegangen, die um die Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts in Domgymnasium umbenannt wurde. Das Regelwerk der Schule war seit der Reformation an der Schulordnung des Gymnasiums zu Wittenberg ausgerichtet worden. Kolberg gehörte bereits im 15. und 16. Jahrhundert zu den Städten, aus denen nach Stettin die meisten Studenten der Universität Greifswald kamen. Geschichte des Königlichen, Staatlichen Dom- und Real-Gymnasiums zu Kolberg / Ostsee ist eine umfangreiche Schul- und Zeitgeschichte über das traditionsreiche Gymnasium der pommerschen Stadt Kolberg (heute Kolobrzeg in Polen). Das Werk behandelt die Entwicklung der Schule von 1845 bis 1945 und erschien 1978 im Selbstverlag der Vereinigung ehemaliger Schüler. Das Buch besitzt zugleich den Charakter eines Erinnerungs- und Heimatbuches ehemaliger Schüler aus Pommern.
