Mai 1816 in Hamburg; Gest…. 31. Mai 1872 in Braunschweig) war ein deutscher Schriftsteller. Er ist vor allem durch seine Bücher über Nordamerika bekannt; seine Bestseller waren Die Regulatoren in Arkansas (1846) und Die Flußpiraten des Mississippi (1847). 1844 veröffentlichte er sein erstes Buch, Streif- und Jagdzüge durch die Vereinigten Staaten Nord=Amerikas (Grundlage war sein Tagebuch. Im nächsten Jahr heiratete er Anna Aurora Sauer, die Tochter eines Kunstmalers aus Dresden. Mit ihr hatte er unter anderem die Tochter Marie, die 1870 William Huch heiratete, einen Onkel von Ricarda Huch und Rudolf Huch. Marie selbst war die Mutter von unter anderem Friedrich Huch und Felix Huch. Auch für die deutschen politischen Verhältnisse besaß Gerstäcker ein waches Auge und beobachtete die Ereignisse der Revolution von 1848 sehr genau. 1849 unternahm der junge Familienvater eine weitere Reise, die ihn diesmal nach Südamerika, Kalifornien, Tahiti und Australien führte und von der er erst 1852 wieder nach Europa zurückkam. Er schlug sich unterwegs auf abenteuerliche Weise durch, seine Familie wusste er durch die inzwischen veröffentlichten Werke finanziell abgesichert. Zustand: GUT! Issued in decorative cloth with gilt lettering to spine. First English edition in a custom made slipcase. Friedrich Gerstäcker was a German traveler and novelist. Afte…r being apprenticed to a commercial house, he learned farming in Saxony, but in 1837 engaged as a cabin-boy on a vessel bound from Bremen to New York. In America he wandered over a large part of the United States, supporting himself by whatever work came to hand. After wandering through most of the United States, spending some time as a hunter and trapper in the Indian territory, and in 1842 keeping a hotel at Point Coupée, Louisiana. His writings in the form of essays, short stories, and novels provide insights into folkways, social conditions, popular religion, gender roles, and a host of other topics relating to backwoods life in Arkansas. After his return to Germany, Gerstäcker began a career as a writer, based initially on his American experiences. The first ten chapters detail his travels at sea and in South America. After a short stay in Valparaiso, he made San Francisco and 'the new wonderful land, with its golden dreams'… on September 13. The second portion of what George Cosgrove calls 'one of the most entertaining and intelligent narratives of that period' covers in vivid detail his mining experiences [.] In addition to providing excellent observations of daily life, Gerstäcker's narrative is invaluable for documenting the activities of Germans in the gold fields, the difficulties of being a foreigner, and the miner's tax.
