Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Cover Photo Kaiser Wilhelm II, 1910 by E. Bieber (illustrator). 1st Edition. Published as part of the Modern Library Chronicles series, The German Empire, 1870-1918 offers historian Michael Stürmer's concise yet penetrating analysis of the rise, consolidation, and ultimate collapse of Imperial Germany. Stürmer explores the political tensions, social dynamics, and international forces that shaped the Second Reich, tracing how Prussian militarism, industrial expansion, nationalism, and diplomatic entanglements contributed to both German unification and its later destabilization. This Modern Library edition, first issued in 2000, presents the text in an accessible, thematically organized narrative suitable for both scholars and general readers. This copy is the second printing, indicated by the number line '2 4 6 8 9 7 5 3 1.' Bound in illustrated boards featuring the portrait of Kaiser Wilhelm II, the book is clean, tight, and sharp, showing minimal handling. The dust jacket remains bright and intact, with only light shelfwear and minor edge rubbing; it retains the original price on the rear panel. Internally, the text is clean and unmarked except for a prior owner's neat, dated inscription on the title page. Decorative Modern Library endpapers remain vivid, and all pages are crisp with no dog-earing or staining. As part of the respected Modern Library Chronicles series, this volume emphasizes readable synthesis supported by modern scholarship. It includes maps, chronology, a section of key figures, bibliography, and index, providing a solid reference framework. Stürmer, one of Germany's leading historians, brings academic rigor to a compact format, offering a balanced and interpretive portrait of the empire that shaped Europe's entry into the 20th century. Provenance: Ex Libris Herbert L. Kimmich (1935-2025), Morristown, NJ, mechanical engineer (Stevens Institute; Foster Wheeler executive) and active church member - and his wife Hildegard L. Kimmich (1937-2010), German-born educator and longtime Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church chorister. Michael Stürmer (b. 1938) is a prominent German historian known for his scholarship on modern German political identity, foreign policy, and national memory. A longtime professor at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Stürmer has served as director of the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP) and has advised German government institutions. He is widely published in both academic and public-facing formats and is recognized for his ability to synthesize complex historical debates into clear, engaging analysis.

SB. 370pp with portrait picture frontispiecePublished Price £14.50 In these memoirs the Kaiser sets out to justify events and decisions taken by him during his thirty year reign, an apologia pro vita sua. He does not reminisce about his childhood and youth but plunges straight in with the nature of the relations and the quarrel between Bismarck and himself, for it was only two years into his reign that he gave the chancellor he had inherired from his grandfather Wilhelm I and his father Frederick III (they both died in 1888) the imperial heave-ho.The magazine Punch commented on this with its famous cartoon âDropping the Pilotâ. Wilhelm had been described by his grandmother, Queen Victoria, as conceited and hot headed; he was certainly impetuous and liable to swings of mood and moments of indecision; he firmly believed in the divine right of kings. An accident at birth had left him with a withered arm which he always tried to conceal. He was vainglorious and loved dressing up in uniform and striking imperious poses. He cherished his relations with his armed forces to whom he was the All Highest War Lord. He liked to command an army in peacetime manoeuvres and he also liked to win, something the opposing commander always had to keep in mind if he was to have any further prospects. He nearly caused his Chief of Staff, von Moltke, to have a heart attack when he suddenly tried to reverse the mobilzation orders that were being put into effect in August 1914. This book is an interesting study of a character who wasnât the great Emperor he liked to think he was. He did do much for science and technology and was responsible for the creation of a High Seas fleet to challenge the Royal Navy. His relations with England were on a love hate basis; Edward VII (who couldnât stand him) was his uncle and George V his cousin. He maintained to the end that the army was stabbed in the back and that he bore no blame for the war.
