Im Gegensatz zu den französischen Diensten wird den "weiteren Engagements der Schweizer, z.B. in den Generalstaaten, Spanien, Habsburg-Österreich, Neapel, Sardinien-Piemont" generell weniger Aufmerksamkeit zuteil, was u.a. auf die wesentlich längere und intensivere und damit auch quantitativ bedeutendere Tradition der Soldabkommen (sog. Kapitulationen) mit Frankreich zurückzuführen ist. "Die Geschichte und die Bedeutung der Schweizer Truppen in Frankreich unterscheiden sich nicht nur was die gesamthafte Dauer der Dienste anbetrifft von denjenigen in Holland; unterschiedlich waren vor allem die Beweggründe, welche die Kantone zur Entsendung von Truppen nach Frankreich oder Holland bewogen. Es waren die reformierten Orte, die seit jeher mit Holland Kontakte aller Art pflegten und die als Reaktion auf die Aggressionspolitik Ludwigs XIV. 1693 den Generalstaaten erstmals die offizielle Werbung von Schweizer Truppen erlaubten.
