This is a charming printed map, with some hand-coloring done in watercolor, that shows South America. The mapmaker was Robert Wilkinson (1752-1825), an English mapmaker whose work spanned mostly from 1794-1816. The engraver of this map was L. Puke. This map likely came from Wilkinson's famous atlas titled, "A General Atlas, being a Collection of Maps of the World and Quarters, the Principal Empires and Kingdoms & c." (London: 1794). The information used to draw this map may have been taken from James Forbes's Descriptive Letters and Drawings, Volume 1. The cardinal extremities of this map are centered upon the continent so that the north and south boundaries of the map stop at about the north and south ends of the South America and the west and east boundaries are defined by the west and east boundaries of South America. The hand-colored areas demarcate some of the South American regions and countries such as the Amazon, Paraguay, Guyana, Brazil, Peu, Chile, Patagonia, and Terra del Fuego. The map border shows degrees of latitude and longitude. The surrounding oceans are labeled as the North Atlantic Ocea, South Atlantic Ocean, and South Pacific Ocean. The continent is labeled with all sorts of names that identify natural geographic features as well as other landmarks such as ports and cities. Geographic features are depicted such as rivers and mountain ranges.
