H-3 Kolibrie, the first civil helicopter manufactured in series that was powered by ramjets. Author Will Albert Kuipers was a Dutch engineer who graduated from the University of Delft and was part of the original small team of engineers (alongside Gerard Frans Verhage and Jan Meijer Drees) that designed and built the helicopter in the early 1950s. It chronicles the 'making of' this innovative aircraft, which famously debuted at the 1958 Paris Air Show. The narrative explores the significant technical and logistical difficulties the team faced while developing such a unique two-seater project. The N.H.I. H-3 Kolibrie itself is a piece of aviation history; it was notable for using tip-mounted ramjet engines rather than a traditional central engine, and an original model is currently housed in the Aviodrome aviation museum in the Netherlands.
