Full rich red top grain leather, gilt decorated and imprinted, spine panels rib divided, All Edges Gilt, gold moire endpapers, and a matching satin page-marker ribbon. The gilt is 22 karat; the paper is 60-pound Franklin Library '1854' White book sheet, typeface is 10-point Baskerville. The Franklin Library, doing what they did best. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. Will Harmuth (illustrator). 1st Edition. This offering is a Deluxe, Limited Edition Franklin Library publication of The Life I Really Lived written by Jessamyn West and illustrated by Will Harmuth. It's deluxe in that it has the "built in" bookmark, gold-gilded page edges, satin-like end pages, and leather-bound boards with a ribbed spine and gold-gilded lettering decorating both the front and back boards and forming the print on the spine. It IS a book in Franklin Mint's The First Edition Society which means that it has also been signed (perhaps laser-printed) and includes a laid-in eight page "Notes from the Editors" pamphlet describing the work. The book was published by The Franklin Library in 1979 and is a stated "limited first edition published by special arrangement with" Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, Inc. Usually the books in this series by Franklin Library were published a bit before the trade editions so, in reality, the books in The First Edition Society are the true firsts. This copy is in fine condition and has not been read. To my knowledge, the only time it's been opened has been when I opened it to glean the information that I've included in this blurb. What an absolutely beautiful gift . . . for yourself or a loved one! Thank you for looking! Signed by Author(s).

For not only does Ralph Ellison's nightmare journey across the racial divide tell unparalleled truths about the nature of bigotry and its effects on the minds of both victims and perpetrators, it gives us an entirely new model of what a novel can be. As he journeys from the Deep South to the streets and basements of Harlem, from a horrifying "battle royal" where black men are reduced to fighting animals, to a Communist rally where they are elevated to the status of trophies, Ralph Ellison's nameless protagonist ushers readers into a parallel universe that throws our own into harsh and even hilarious relief. Suspenseful and sardonic, narrated in a voice that takes in the symphonic range of the American language, black and white, Invisible Man is one of the most audacious and dazzling novels of our century.' 454 pages. 6.5 x 9.5 inches.
