Foxing to endpapers and prelims; rubbing and wear, with boards just peeking through at tips. About very good. Classic work on San Francisco's Chinatown, pairing text by Will Irwin with striking photographs by German-American photographer Arnold Genthe. An expanded version of Pictures of Old Chinatown (1908), with the same text but with a larger selection of plates and the addition of in-text photo-illustrations.

Faded, scuffed, rubbed, bumped, edges frayed, torn. Binding- cracked at hinge areas inside. Pages- age toned, some foxing. Protective cover.

An important book of photographs and their documentary history. Condition: some rubbing, fading to boards; light scuffing to corners and top/bottom spine; there is very faint foxing to endpapers, some soiling; age-toning to the pages and some light, normal wear from both age and reference. For its age, book is quite bright and solid.

Published September 1908. 57 pgs text plus 47 full page photographic plates in b+w. Spine title lettering faded but readable. A few pages have small spots with some spotting to edge of text block else clean inside. Despite this a better than average copy of this important photographic history book. San Francisco Chinatown before the 1906 earthquake and fire. Genthe's most famous work.

Boards bumped along edges, with some spotting and scuffing to cloth. Binding sound. Pages clean and unmarked. Overall, a Very Good copy. Inscribed on front free endpaper to President Grover Cleveland's daughter: "For Miss Esther Cleveland - So that she may know what the real Chinatown looked like when she sees the new one -- with best wishes from Arnold Genthe, New York, February 1915." Genthe photographed Esther Cleveland in New York on February 8, 1915. The negative from that photography session is now held at the Library of Congress. . Signed.
