An important book of photographs and their documentary history. Condition: some rubbing, fading to boards; light scuffing to corners and top/bottom spine; there is very faint foxing to endpapers, some soiling; age-toning to the pages and some light, normal wear from both age and reference. For its age, book is quite bright and solid.

Inscribed on front free endpaper to President Grover Cleveland's daughter: "For Miss Esther Cleveland - So that she may know what the real Chinatown looked like when she sees the new one -- with best wishes from Arnold Genthe, New York, February 1915." Genthe photographed Esther Cleveland in New York on February 8, 1915. The negative from that photography session is now held at the Library of Congress. . Signed.
