First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. James, Will (illustrator). 1st Edition. This is a true First edition - has the letter "A" on the copyright page. William Roderick James (June 6, 1892 - September 3, 1942) was a Canadian-American artist and writer of the American West. He is known for writing Smoky the Cowhorse, for which he won the 1927 Newbery Medal. He wrote numerous "cowboy" stories for adults and children. His artwork, which predominantly involved cowboy and rodeo scenes, is widely recognized as being "in the tradition of Charles Russell". This book is profusely illustrated with Will James' drawings. Each drawing is colored 2-4 colors and each drawing fills the entire page opposite the page of text. Each picture has Will James signature printed on it. Binding is firm - no missing signatures or pages. The pages are lightly foxed & browning on edges but there is NO writing, tears or creases on pages. A few pages have soil / smudge marks - none larger than an inch and are usually towards bottom edges or near where pages were turned. Front and back end papers are blank and clean except for browning especially along inside gutter and edges. Blue cloth covers are soiled, rubbed and faded along edges and spine. Pictorial cover which is of a boy and his horse, title and author. is printed in black ink and is still very visible and overall unmarred. Top and Bottom of spine is fraying and cover edges show light shelf wear. Corners are worn through but they are NOT bumped or badly frayed. See pictures. There is NO dust jacket. This is NOT an ex-lib nor a remainder. Size approximately 9.5"W by 7" L and has 48 pages excluding end papers. It is rare to find a First edition of a children's book that is approximately 85+ years old and is such very good condition. Note: We have a closed shop - so our books are not handled by public everyday. We make every effort to fairly describe the condition of the book and identify any flaws (writing, tears, creases, folds), including that of the dust jacket. We use the "Fine or Near Fine" book condition judiciously when grading of the book or dust jacket.
