A very pleasing design by Will, advertising his studio school at Broadway and Astor Place, where he taught drawing and painting, as well as executing commissions for Harper's, Scribner's, The Century and other magazines, and books. Will (1834-1910) was born in Germany and came to New York at the age of 21. He was a painter in oil and watercolor, and an illustrator and draftsman, although his first work to be exhibited at the National Academy, in 1858, were four crayon portraits. In his later years he lived in Jersey City, where he did numerous paintings and drawings of the town, one hundred of which were shown at a special exhibition after his death. Pen and ink on paper, with Chinese white. 1 vols. 12 x 8-1/2 inches, in an archival mat.
