Sol Plaatje's Mafeking Diary, written (in English) during the famous siege of 1899-1900, is one of South Africa's finest pieces of writing, inspired by the events he witnessed and his own part in the siege. Its author, Sol Plaatje, would later achieve fame as a journalist, writer and political leader, but in October 1899, when he began his diary, he was just 23 years old and worked as an interpreter in the local magistrate's office.
