Seller: Barry Cassidy Rare Books, Sacramento, CA, U.S.A.
Soft cover. Condition: Good. Original publisher's beige paper pamphlet. Front and back covers are both loose but included. 6" x 9." Twenty-six pages, complete. One additional page in back discusses a series of resolutions passed relating to John A. Sutter. Pages are intact overall but have rippling and dampstaining throughout, possible mold damage at bottoms of pages, creased corners on fore-edge, and some wrinkling. Covers are loose but included. Covers have darkening and chipping and closed tears along extremities. A Good copy. This pamphlet contains the proceedings of the ceremonies held on July 7, 1862. The occasion was the laying of the cornerstone of the first building, Pioneer Hall, of the Pioneer Society in California. There are three main features in this pamphlet in addition to the proceedings of the events, an oration by Willard B. Farwell, a poem by Eliza A. Pittsinger, and an address by E. H. Washburn. Farwell pays tribute to California pioneers and the state of California but also laments the ongoing American Civil War and denounces the Confederacy and its aim to destroy the Union. Pittsinger also pays tribute to California pioneers through her poem. Washburn originally gave his address on September 9, 1862 on the 12th anniversary of California's admission as a state in the Union. He, too, laments the catastrophe of the ongoing Civil War. Within his address, Washburn lays out the three main goals of the Pioneer Society which are to foster social connections between California pioneers, collect and preserve historical materials about early California history and the pioneers, and to honor California pioneers of the past and present.
