Limited to 500 copies of which this is copy 249. Inscribed on the half title page "To my Dear Friend and colleague in Custeriana . ., With Best wishes, James Willert 7/12/81." This copy has original sketches by Van Ess, a double page sketch of cavalrymen on horseback and Indians in the background on the front endpapers and first fly-leaf, another double page sketch on the rear endpaper and fly leaf, of a group of Indians on horseback with army tents in the background, a full page sketch opposite the half title page of Indians on horseback, a quarter page sketch at the top of the half title page of a camp scene, a full page sketch opposite the title page of and Indian on horseback leaving camp with teepees and an Indian waving in the background, four sketches on the copyright page, two axes, a shield and a quiver, a full page sketch on the dedication page of cavalry, a full page sketch opposite page VII of a last stand scene, a full page sketch on page IX, of a fallen trooper and someone in buckskin holding an arrow and two other troopers, two sketches on page IX of a cavalryman dismounted shooting at coming Indians and an Indian on horseback seeing a column of troopers coming, a full page sketch opposite page XI of a trooper standing over a fallen comrade with Indians in the background, two small sketches on page XI, a trooper dismounted with column behind and a rifle with feathers hanging down, a full page sketch opposite page xiii of a trooper wounded and an arrow in his horse with shooting Indians, two sketches on the credit page of a trooper standing guard in front of tents and below is another sketch of two troopers sitting by a fire in camp, a full page sketch of troopers on the inside of the last fly-leaf. A special and very unique presentation gift with 21 original sketches in black ink with all the larger ones signed and dated 1981 by Van Ess, two doubled page sketches, eight full page sketches, eleven other sketches. Laid in is the original four page promotional for the book. O'Keefe 2547 says, "An insight into General Terry's frame of mind during the Little Big Horn Campaign." One of the more difficult Willert titles. Fine, bright copy housed in a matching cloth slipcase with leather spine and titles stamped in gilt.
