Published in 1902, this is an account of an expedition, led by him, across central Iceland in 1900. The five men and one woman journeyed from the north-east of the country down to the south-west, and the book also gives accounts of visits to the Faroe Islands and coastal journeys to the fjords. Including maps, photographs and an extensive appendix compiled by expedition member and botanist Arthur William Hill on the island's plant life, this work remains a detailed and engaging portrait. The impressions made upon the party by natural features such as geysers, quicksand and lava formations are vividly described, as are the visits to isolated settlements and farms. The chapter on Reykjavik covers the political situation in the country, still under Danish rule.…

Two fold -out color maps, two b&w maps in text, photo frontispiece and 59 b/w photos and illustrations in text. Collated, complete. Red cloth binding with gilt titling and illustration on front board, gilt titling on spine. Binding is intact if somewhat precarious--separation starting between some page gatherings and before publisher's catalog at rear, fly-leaf separating over front hinge with webbing showing through, rear fly-leaf appears to have been reglued over the hinge by a previous owner, though part the free end page is stuck to the paste-down; cloth fraying at corners of boards and foot of spine, 1/2" of cloth chipped off head of spine; spine cloth darkened, gilt lettering dulled but otherwise clearly legible; gilt on front board remains bright and bold; interior clean, text, maps and illustrations very good throughout. From the collection of Alonzo (& Nancy) Houser, with their striking plate on front end page and Alonzo's small name inscription on front cover. Alonzo Houser was a highly prolific artist, sculptor and the founder of the art department at Macalester College (St. Paul), whose works of public art can be found throughout the Twin Cities. Nancy started Nancy Hauser Dance Company and School in Minneapolis, which focused on contemporary and modern works in the German Expressionist tradition from its inception in 1961 until its closing in 2011.
