Contact seller5-star sellerHard Cover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition. First edition. Jacket rubbed and lightly stained on rear panel, tape repairs on jacket reverse. 1936 Hard Cover. 275, [3] pp. 8vo. A novel by the editor of Adventure magazine. "The dark waters of New York harbor, the murky waterfront dives, the cavernous wa…rehouses, the old abandoned mansions, the fog-swept wharves -- such is the realm of the smuggler and such the background for this exciting novel by a master of adventure fiction. The story opens with Dex Ward, formerly a young man of wealth, eking out an existence by ballyhooing in front of a New York theatre. He meets, by chance, an old friend, Teverson, who induces him to give up his job and use his magnificent strength and quick wit in the capacity of a bodyguard. The pay will be good, but there are to be no questions asked. At Teverson's apartment Dex meets the dark-haired, dark-eyed Stephanie Gorda and is intrigued by her beauty as well as mystified by her business among the disreputable characters who come to confer with Teverson. Events take a quick turn and Dex soon discovers that he has become involved in a gang warfare between two rival smuggling factions, one headed by Teverson, the other by a sinister figure known as the Eel. Stephanie's place in the picture becomes apparent when Dex learns that she is endeavoring to obtain shipments of guns to her father, an exiled European dictator. When Teverson is scared off by the threats of the Eel, Dex takes matters into his own hands. A terrific struggle ensues, Stephanie, whom Dex has come to love, is kidnapped, and he requires all his courage to fight back at the Eel. Here is a book which is impossible to put down until the final word of its thrill-packed pages is read.
