LS. 1pg. 7 x 9. March 9, 1861. Washington. A letter signed W.W. Corcoran to Carlisle and Mann in Washington, D.C. The famous banker wrote: In answer to your note of the 8th I enclose a copy of a state of the Burton debt upon which the Judt. was based, dated 22 May 1857, and you will observe a discrepancy of $100 between it and the amt. state by you. The Judt. embraces everything including the debt secured by the Deed of Trust, as heretofore stated to you by the writer, and the whole amount, on the 1st Judgt., will be about $10,850, exclusive of costs. During the Civil War, Corcoran, a Confederate sympathizer, left for Paris, so he may have been trying to get some assets for his trip. The letter has some tape along the folds but is in fine condition with a large and fancy signature.
