London, 1709. 12mo up to 8½" tall., 198pp. with 12 plates of tables, maps, and 2 of 5 numbered plates. Missing frontispiece and front folding map. Rear board missing and front board detached. Contents are in very good condition. William Dampier (1651-1715) was an English explorer, pirate, privateer and naturalist who became the first Englishman to explore parts of what is today Australia, and the first person to circumnavigate the world three times. Those whom Dampier influenced, include George Anson, James Cook, Horatio Nelson, Charles Darwin, and Alfred Russel Wallace. He may also have inspired Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe and his descriptions of the aborigines at King Sound likely inspired Swift's 'Yahoos' in Gulliver's Travels.…
