With the publisher's advertisement leaf bound in at rea…r. THIS COPY IS EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED by the insertion of a folding engraved map of the Town and Port, and an additional engraved view of Pelham Place and Crescent. The plates depict: View from Minnis Park, View from the East Well, View from the Pier Rocks, View in East Bourn Street, St. Clement's Church, Town Hall, Remains of the Town Hall, North West View of the Castle, Marine Parade, Pelham Place, Pelham Place and Crescent, View from the White Rock. Anderson records two versions of the Hastings Guide, but states no publishers. The likelier of the two, in 8vo rather than 12mo format, gives third edition as 1824 with subsequent issues from 1825 to 1830. Halkett & Laing and NUC assign authorship of earlier editions (eg. 1794) to James Stell. EXTREMELY SCARCE, ESPECIALLY IN THIS CONDITION.

Contact seller5-star sellerUncolored map on thin paper, never folded. Very good condition, with several short repaired tears at the edges, some extending into the printed surface. Prominently featured are three rail lines in the area: The London & Brighton Railway, Hastings, Rye & Ashford Railway, and Tunbridge Wells & Hastings Railway. Diplock published…a guidebook to Hastings in 1846. It is quite possible that this was published around the same time reflecting proposed rail lines, but the actual lines named here were not completed until the 1850's. J. Banks is shown as the surveyor, A. Adlard as the lithographer.
