Hardcover. Condition: Like New. Like New. A national blueprint on the state of forestry and timber production in 1973. The same information can still be applied today as we manage our natural resources. A beautiful nearly new hardcover and DJ. Stored in a professors office from light and moisture. Cloth on boards with green lettering on the front cover and spine. No bumped corners or wear. Text is bright and free of tanning. B&W photos. Contains tables, graphs, and diagrams. Author's notes. Bibliography. Index. 260 pp. Publisher's blurb from front flap, "United States forests stand at the center of a persistent supply crisis: on the one hand, real prices of our strategic wood products continually rising, and the experts calling for intensified resource management and utilization as remedies; on the other hand, an articulate body of opinion advocating the enlargement of wilderness and developed recreation areas and stressing other nonmember uses of our forests. It was in view of these demands and controversies that a nationwide policy conference with representative from government, business, and conservation and consumer groups was held in late 1970 under the sponsorship of the State University of New York. This book, a result of that conference, brings together the ideas of 22 authorities. Their papers explore three major areas of concern. First, where we stand: What is the forest-resource position of the United States today? And what is the timber-supply issue? Second, where we are headed: What are the forest resource prospects for the immediate future and the longer term? What are the opportunities, for improving the timber supply? Finally, policies and programs: What have been the United States forest policies? What policies and programs will meet the forest-resource issue of the future? Of special note is the final chapter- "Epilogue 1971-1972"- which updates current topics including the clearcutting issue, the President's economic stabilization program, progress with forest-related legislation in the 92nd and 93rd Congresses, and the 1972 Nader study of the Forest Service. The discussion. and ideas presented in TIMBER! will prove timely reading for all persons, both professionals and Laymen, concerned with problems of environmental conversation. …

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a comprehensive manual for effective decision-making when harvesting timber. It focuses on the Southern pine region and can be applied to any tree species. The book covers the complexities of forestry and the timber industry including the sale, production, and logging processes. It provides an easy-to-follow method for determining the appropriate value of each part of a tree, emphasizing that fixed costs are irrelevant to the equation. Through its case studies and examples, this book provides a valuable method for calculating a tree's "conversion surplus." This concept reveals the surplus value after conversion costs are removed, helping forest managers determine the most profitable use of each tree. Such insights are crucial for maximizing profits and minimizing waste in the timber industry. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the history of forestry in the Great Lakes region through the lens of the region's economic development. The author traces the ways in which forest policy has intersected with the expansion of agriculture and with the changing needs of the industrial sector. By focusing on the changing relationship between forests and farming, the author presents a unique perspective on both the history of land use in the region and on the history of forestry. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a detailed look at the history and transformation of Piedmont Virginia forests, which currently provide the vast majority of the state's forest products. Historically, the region's forests were primarily used to support the tobacco industry, resulting in large-scale clearing and abandonment from the 18th century onward, with subsequent reforestation by second-growth pine. Today, only 28% of the region's population is urban, and the continued economic importance of timber in the Piedmont area is examined through the prism of shifting agricultural practices and the development of a diffuse industrial forest product sector. The book provides valuable insights into the ways that land use, economic activity, and environmental factors have shaped the history of Piedmont Virginia forests and continue to shape their present conditions and uses. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
