Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. GLADSTONE, WILLIAM EWART (1809-1898) UK Prime Minister. Autograph letter signed, to one of his cousins Miss M.H. Gladstone about access to the House of Commons, 12 Downing Street, 29 March 1855. One leaf, written on both sides, 180 × 110 mm. In black ink. Light folds and minor handling wear, trimmed to one side, otherwise in very good, clean condition. Addressed to a female relative ('My dear cousin', identified as Miss M. H. Gladstone), concerning access to the House of Commons gallery. Gladstone explains that he has 'no power to find an order for admitting ladies to hear any debate', noting that accommodation is extremely limited and 'wholly in the power of the Serjeant-at-Arms', and that even a senior statesman cannot override these institutional restrictions. Written from 12 Downing Street during the political crisis of the Crimean War, shortly after the fall of the Aberdeen ministry and the accession of Lord Palmerston, Gladstone was still using the Chancellor's office to work from, even though the new administration and chancellor were in post. The letter, a request from one of Gladstone's family, demonstrated just how restricted access was for women. In 1855, women had no general right of access to the House of Commons and could only attend debates by special order in a restricted and segregated space, coined 'the ventilator gallery'. Admission was controlled by the Serjeant-at-Arms and beyond the authority of senior ministers. This letter is a stark example of this and shows the exclusion in operation, with Gladstone, recently disposed Chancellor, being unable to grant access to a family member. . Signed by Author(s).

The recipient Arthur George Liddon Rogers (1864-1944, son of the editor of the economist Thorold Rogers) is not named, but the item is from his papers, and was written while he was Secretary of the Liberal Publication Department, a position to which he was appointed in November 1891. 2pp, 12mo. Signed 'Spencer Lyttleton.' In good condition, lightly aged and folded for postage. Begins: 'Dear Sir / I am afraid I cannot ask Mr Gladstone again to sit for his photograph according to your suggestion in the letter to Mr H. Gladstone [the prime minister's son Herbert]. It is a process he particularly dislikes, & the moment is specially unfavourable as it was only yesterday that he was taken by Messrs. Valentine.' "HOMER," is an offprint of his original article for Chambers's Cyclopaedia. Includes a portion of an envelope addressed by him to W.R. Duncan of the Shetland Islands. Also includes a typed and hand-edited letter from the W.R. Duncan to Clifford Truesdell. In the 5 page letter dated 1936 written in Scalloway, Shetland, Scotland, Mr. Duncan describes how he met Gladstone. He describes the hard early life of the tenant fishermen (crofters) of the Shetlands. The letters describes the fortuitous find of a whale and the seizure by an unscrupulous landlord and subsequent legal attempts to fight for tenant rights in court. Mr. Duncan had written Gladstone to seek aid in their appeal for their rights. Gladstone helped the Shetlanders with their appeal and they ultimately won. Gladstone sent Duncan this signed pamphlet. 12mo, wraps, housed in a folding case constructed of half leather and marbled boards (early 20th century). Wrapper, detached at the spine.
