The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. The text pages are clean and bright. The dust jacket has noticable, generalized rubbing, se…veral small to medium sized edge tears, a couple of nicks to the rear flap joint and some beginning spots of ground-in dirt. "Originally published as an anonymous work in 1784, Italian Letters, or, The History of the Count de St. Julian is William Godwin's only epistolary novel. Assumed to be lost for the last hundred and fifty years, its republication has been made possible by Burton R. Pollin's discovery of a single copy in the Bristol University Library." "William Godwin (3 March 1756 7 April 1836) was an English journalist, political philosopher and novelist. He is considered one of the first exponents of utilitarianism, and the first modern proponent of anarchism. Godwin is most famous for two books that he published within the space of a year: An Enquiry Concerning Political Justice, an attack on political institutions, and Things as They Are; or, The Adventures of Caleb Williams, which attacks aristocratic privilege, but also is the first mystery novel. " (from Wikipedia). Illustrated by Jack Brodie (illustrator).

Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. A very nice copy without any flaws. Written in 1794, Caleb Williams is the riveting account of a young man whose curiosity leads him to pry into a murder from the past. The first novel of crime and detection in English literature, it is also a powerful expose of the evils within the political an…d social systems, in 1790s Britain. In addition to the text itself, the editors have included an extensive selection of primary source materials from the period, ranging from Godwin's original manuscript ending and excerpts from his political writings to contemporary reviews, the political writings of Burke and Paine, and materials on crime and the English prison system.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good Minus. 1st Edition. Stated First Edition. You can see the covers in the photos. They are clean. There is color fading off the top edges of the blue part of the covers. The silver lettering on the spine is quite bright. There's just a little bit of crinkling at the… spine ends. The edges and corners are in excellent shape. The book is square and solidly bound from cover to cover. The pages are exceptionally clean. I've scrolled through them a number of times without finding any instances of soiling. One top corner of a page was turned down and has a fairly sharp crease (away from the print). That has left a very light impression of itself on two pages before and after the creased page. I didn't see any other creasing anywhere in the book. There are no markings. No attachments. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. I've always had it in a fitted protective cover. You may be able to make out a vertical shaded line on both the front and rear cover. That's caused by the change on the covers of the book from the black to the blue, with each having a different texture (see fourth photo). Hence, this will be the case on all the jackets of this book. The jacket is in decent shape. There's a tear off the top edge just adjacent to the spine, another one on the spine, and there is a tiny loss at the bottom edge of the spine. The flaps are in very good condition with just a little indent at the top edge of the rear flap. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. As mentioned, it is already protected by a fitted cover. The book begins with statements by John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. They are followed by a Foreword by Sargent Shriver. There are chapters written by Walter Heller, David A. Morse, Emmanuel Pelaez, W. Willard Wirtz, and Sargent Shriver. From the front cover: 'Money alone will not build a viable world. There must be indigenous trained manpower to perform the "middle level" tasks. Here a distinguished group of world leaders tells of constructive ways to give new countries a chance to live and develop.'.
