Pages 229-530 show dampstain at top corner. Bookplates, stamps, catalog number, and card pocket of the Congregational Library, Boston, as well as bookplates of Joshua Wyman Wellman and Arthur H. Wellman. Joshua Wellman (1821-1915) was the pastor of the First Congregational Church in Malden MA, and Arthur Wellman (1855-1948) was a member of the Massachusetts General Court and a professor at Boston University School of Law. This is a book of Scottish philosophy and metaphysics book is arranged in three parts: the philosophy of common sense, the philosophy of perception, and the philosophy of the conditioned. Discussed within these chapters are Reid's doctrine of perception and its defense against Sir Thomas Brown, errors of Reid, doctrine of perception maintained by the Absolute Idealists, the scheme of Arthur Collier, Royer-Collard, Cousin's doctrine of the infinito-absolute, and more. Sir William Hamilton, 9th Baronet FRSE (1788-1856) was a Scottish metaphysician. Hardcover, acceptable condition, dampstained. 530 pages, octavo.

The front cover has had a price in pen at the top left corner and this has been rubbed off causing some damage to the surface. Light chipping at the top and bottom of the spine. Page edges are browned. Previous owner's book plate stuck to the inside of the front cover over a small note in pen. Name and number stamped to the first page. This is the August 1896 issue of "The Book Buyer", which announced on each cover that the magazine was "A Summary of American and Foreign Literature. This issue is particularly rich, not only in textual content, but, also, in illustrative accompaniment. OF particular interest is the article on Friedrich Nietzsche, wherein Nietzsche demolishes Wagner. Also of interest, for the artistically inclined, is an article on naturalist, and illustrator William Hamilton Gibson, who had just recently died (in July 1896) . The cover design for "The Book Buyer", which remained the same through each of its issues, was drawn by American artist Will H. Low (Will Hicok Low). The picture was signed in the plate (lower right corner). TITLE : The Book Buyer ? The rear cover and the insides of the covers are devoted to advertisements. Inside, the text is printed on both calendered paper (polished - pressed) and uncalendered (or soft) paper. A considerable amount of interesting period advertising can be found at the front (4 pages)- and the back (8 pages - unopened). This is the original, in wraps as issued. CONDITION - VERY GOOD - This is a previously owned periodical which remains solid and attractive , the following particulars noted : There is a vague damp stain that displays at the fore-edge of the front cover about 2 inches from the top; modest surface rub and a touch of near-negligible weathering. There are small edge nicks and tears (none of which amount to much) ; on the rear cover are a couple of minute tea stains. Bottom fore-edge corners are creased, front and back. The interior is clean and unmarked. All and all, a very good specimen.
