Efforts to bring these measures into the English language date back to the Renaissance, but no writer has yet succeeded in fully capturing their intricate interplay of quanti…ty and rhythm within English phonology. The author argues that English accent is analogous to the pitch-based musicality of Greek accent, rather than the stress-based system of Latin accent, and should thus be central to any attempt at English classical-style poetry. This marks a significant departure from past attempts, most of which have relied on accentual or quantitative approaches alone. The author's close analysis, integration of insights from a diverse array of thinkers, and provision of numerous examples of varying degrees of success help clarify the challenges in producing English verse that adheres to classical Greek and Latin models.
