Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. Designed by George Lenox (illustrator). 1st Edition. William Yale's The Near East: A Modern History remains one of the most respected mid-century syntheses of Middle Eastern political and diplomatic history. A former U.S. State Department advisor, field intelligence officer, Shell Oil representative, and longtime professor at George Washington University, Yale brought a rare combination of government experience and academic rigor to this landmark work. His treatment of Ottoman dissolution, emergent nationalisms, European imperial rivalries, and early Cold War realignments made this volume a foundational text in modern Middle Eastern studies. This copy, Near Fine, is strikingly well preserved. The dark linen cloth retains its rich color and texture, with gilt spine and cover decorations clean and bright. The binding is unusually strong and square for a 1958 university press publication, and the interior text block is crisp, bright, and only lightly annotated occasionally in pencil. Only the lightest endpaper toning and a single small spot to the rear board prevent a Fine grade. Its provenance is of special scholarly interest. The front endpaper bears the neat signature and dorm address of Barbara Ann Smith, Mitchell Hall, Central State College (Wilberforce, Ohio) today Central State University, one of the nation's most historically significant HBCUs. During the mid-20th century, Central State was a notable intellectual center for international studies, political science, and African American global engagement. A surviving college bookstore price label accompanies the signature, directly tying the volume to the intellectual life of Black collegiate scholarship during a formative era. Designed by George Lenox and printed by Vail-Ballou Press, the volume reflects Michigan's high production standards of the period. Text is well-set, maps are sharply rendered, and the offset printing remains deep and clean throughout. This is the true First Edition, with no indication of later printings, as was typical of the press. A handsome, historically resonant copy important not only within Middle Eastern studies but also as a material witness to African American intellectual history in the 1950s.
