Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Photographs (illustrator). 1st Edition. I have enjoyed William Marchant's book enormously. The title. The Privilege of His Company, is an admirable description of the book. If chronicles the generosity of Noel Coward's friendship without obsequiousness, and it records in detail his amazing instinct for acting and for writing for the stage. The book recognizes the whole of Noel Coward with more penetration than any other book I have read' - Brooks Atkinson. As Noel Coward knew only too well, the problem with being a legend is that only your friends remember that you're a human being. William Marchant a friend of Noel Coward for twenty years, remembers him as the human being few people knew. To Marchant who was a struggling young playwright when he first met Coward. Noel was not only the glittering wit and raconteur. but also a kind. sympathetic, contemplative, and sometimes vulnerable man. As the author recalls him, Coward was as great a performer off-stage as he was on. At the same time he was a man of greater complexity than his image allowed. He could deflate a bore with a stinging one-liner, yet show infinite patience with an insecure actor. He could deliver a hilarious, bravura performance and later confess in his dressing room that he was tired and ill. He could deliberately seat himself in the center of the room at a party but flee to Capri on his sixty-fifth birthday to avoid the celebrations in his honor. But whatever the contradictions between the public performer and the private person, they were united in the Man of the Theatre. For the overruling passion of Coward's life was the theatre.and the people in it. The author shows Coward in his essential relations with these people, among them Vivien Leigh, Marlene Dietrich, Mary Martin, Lunt and Fontanne, Laurence Harvey, John Gielgud, Elaine Stritch, Clifton Webb, Edith Evans, Maureen Stapleton, and the Redgraves, Michael and Lynn. Generously illustrated with photographs, many of them never before published, this entertaining, affectionate memoir will enable the reader to enjoy, as they did, the privilege of his company. William Marchant has written several plays, including The Desk Set; a novel (Gondolier): and many screen and television plays, among them The Great Brink's Robbery.Slight bumping to top and bottom of spine. The clear plastic dust cover has a rip and three small sections missing. Book.
