The first edition of The Lonely Ones by William Steig, inscribed by the author to Governor Nelson Rockefeller, an admirer of his illustrations. (illustrator). First Edition, First Printing. Octavo, 102pp, [2]. Illustrated paper boards, title printed along spine. Stated "First Edition" on the copyright page. This copy appears unread. Light offsetting to endpapers from the dust jacket, small tear to lower edge of rear endpaper. In the publisher's first state dust jacket, $1.00 retail price on the front flap, light sunning to the spine, a near fine example. Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "Best Wishes to Nelson Rockefeller / from / William Steig / I hope you like these drawings." Rockefeller kept a woodcarving by Steig on his desk in New York. Nelson Rockefeller (1908-1979) served as governor of New York from 1959 to 1973 and as the 41st vice president of the United States from 1974 to 1977 under President Gerald Ford. Rockefeller was the son of John D. Rockefeller, Jr., and the grandson of the founder of Standard Oil, John D. Rockefeller. He passed away on January 26, 1979, at the age of 70. Signed.
