Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Frank Boyd (illustrator). 1st Edition. William Whitman 3rd. The Giant Sorcerer. Bos: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1927, 1st. edition, 1st. printing, x, 131 pp. *** A relatively scare, early example of science fiction blended with fantasy for young readers. The villain is a mechanical sorcerer [robot] named Mechanus. The word "robot" first appeared in 1920 in a Czech play titled R.U.R. This word had not gained wide usage in America when this book was written, hence the term "mechanical" was used. Mechanus kidnaps a girl named Cassandra. Her brother Raphael sets out to rescue her with the help of the Earth Mother, who perceives Mechanus as a serious threat to the world's well-being. Armed with powers over nature and all living things, Raphael tracks the mechanical sorcerer to his stronghold where an epic battle ensues. Illustrated end papers, color frontis. illustration, eleven (11) b&w plate illustrations, and tail pieces, all by Frank Boyd. The original color illustrated Dust Jacket (not price clipped) is in a clear protective cover. This book is in my inventory and the images are of this particular item. *** Bound in light green pictorial cloth boards with light soil and shelf wear. The jacket has moderate soil overall, several large damp stains, moderate chipping at corners and bottom of spine, a large chip at the top of the spine, another large chip on back panel. Very faint damp stain bottom corner of first few pages, rest of book clean in good binding. Owner's names on half-title. G in Fair jacket. *** 8.25 inches tall by 6.25 inches.
