Add to basketHardback. Condition: Very Good. C Fleming Williams (illustrator). Second Impression. PINCHER MARTIN O.D. "Taffrail" Illustrated by C. Fleming Williams. W. R. Chambers, Edinburgh. 1916 Second Impression 340pp Illustrated Hardback. This copy is bound navy blue linen covered boards with light blue titling and decoration to the front and spine. There is a small neat signature to the f.e.p. dated 27-11-16. there is some light spotting to the prelims but this does not penetrate further into the book. "Taffrail" was the pen name of Captain Henry Taprell Dorling. He was born in Duns, Berwickshire, on 8 September 1883, the son of Francis Dorling of Farnborough, Hampshire, a Colonel in the Royal Sussex Regiment, and his wife Constance Elizabeth (nee Holland). He entered H.M.S. Britannia in 1897 and served as a midshipman in H.M.S. Terrible in South Africa and China, taking part in the relief of Peking in 1900. He became a sub-lieutenant in 1902, was promoted to lieutenant in 1904 and qualified as a staff instructor in 1913. During the Great War he served chiefly with destroyers in the North Sea, engaged mostly with minelaying. He was mentioned in dispatches and was awarded the D.S.O. in 1918, having already received a gold medal from the Swedish government for saving life at sea. In 1918, he joined the plans division of the Admiralty staff, serving there until 1921. He retired from the service in 1929. He had already established himself as a popular writer on ships and the sea and on life in the Royal Navy in war and peace. After his retirement he applied himself seriously to narratives of the sea based upon Admiralty and other authoritative sources for both fiction and non-fiction. His earliest volume published under the nom-de-plume "Taffrail" was this book Pincher Martin, O.D., a collection of stories and sketches of life in the Navy. Ref Z4.
