Clean dust jacket is not price clipped, unchipped, has several short closed edge tears; enclosed in new archival quality removable mylar cover. At the beginning of the twentieth century, dedicated public health doctors and workers braved hardships and risked their lives in all parts of the world to fight against disease. Here is a vivid account of their triumphs, and occasional tragic failures. Here are the untold stories behind the battles against yellow fever, malaria, and hookworm, and against the hostility and suspicion this campaign aroused in the South. Greer Williams has drawn upon previously unpublished material in The Rockefeller Foundation archives. And, from interviews with the scientists involved, he has caught their personalities with insight and sympathy and drawn a compelling narrative of their quests.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition. Take a look at the photographs. This book is in excellent condition. The covers have no soiling. They have little to no wear. The interior of the book looks perfect. I almost never use that word, but I think it's safe here. The pages are bright and very clean. There is no soiling, no markings, no writing/underlining, no creasing. Even the end papers look perfect. The dust jacket is rated Very Good. However, as you can see from the photographs, it has several imperfections. They are two small tears at the top of the front, a tiny peel at the top of the spine, and two tears and a surface scratch on the back. Still, these imperfections are fairly minor and the dust jacket, as you can see from the photographs, presents well. It is Unsoiled and Unclipped, and it will be fitted with a protective cover. The previous owner, who took such good care of this book was Dr. Louis B. Fierman, an innovator in the field of psychotherapy and psychiatry, a therapist, and a longtime Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Yale University. He was also an alumni of Case Western Reserve University, and included in the book are a couple of notes to Dr. Fierman from a Sheila Evenson, who is the director of alumni outreach for the school. From the DJ flap " this is the detailed history of Western Reserve's well-known revision of its medical curriculum, implemented in 1952 and advanced to a second stage in 1968. The changes were based on the premise that the curriculum should conform to students' needs and interests, and various features were later adopted by many American and British medical schools. Central to the design of the new curriculum were these approaches: that the teaching be based on problem solving rather than the memorization of facts, and the students accept responsibility for self-education; that since it is impossible to learn all of medicine in four years, basic principles should be emphasized, this is the responsibility of the faculty as a whole; that the curriculum should be designed as a logical continuum by faculty subject committees and not by departments; the teaching should be interdisciplinary since medical knowledge derives from many disciplines; that basic medical sciences should be integrated with clinical medicine; and that the product of this experience should be an undifferentiated physician educated to think both scientifically and humanistically, inasmuch as both science and concern for the individual patient are essential to good medical care.".
