XX At this time DOWN BEAT was a large format magazine measuring 15 x 11 when unfolded, so the 18 pages are the equivalent of 36. Some of the short articles and news items in this particular issue are about Artie Shaw answering his critics, Herb Haymer (tenor saxophone), Charlie Barnet, Kay Starr (vocalist), Joe Venuti (violin), Agustin Lara and collecting American royalties, Lionel Hampton, Billy Eckstine, Sabby Lewis, Count Basie on how bad business is, Slim Gailard, Evolution of Jazz, Bill Russo, Max Roach, Charlie Parker, Doris Day in films, live entertainment on television, Hillbilly and Western music threat to jazz, small combos, record revies, Jane Froman lawsuit against Pan American Airways, Arrangers? Corner (column by Sy Oliver and Dick Jacobs), full page of list of Where the Bands Are Playing (includes combos and singles), European jazz, London Palladium concerts, and advertisements related to music and musicians.
