The radiotracer method is clearly one of the most powerful tools in scientific research. Despite the number of excellent volumes that have appeared during the past two decades describing radioisotope techniques, it appears that a need still exists for a systematic treatment of this subject which covers the necessary fundamental background as well as up-to-date developments, such as liquid scintillation counting. As the title implies, this volume is written primarily for students and investigators in the biological sciences. However, the approach and contents will be found equally worthwhile by readers in the physical, medical, and engineering sciences. Specifically, the purpose is to provide general background information in nuclear physics and radiochemistry and to stress the considerations of radiotracer experimental design necessary for the successful application of radioactive isotopes as a research tool. The organization of the text stems both from the authors' research interests and, more importantly, from teaching experience involving students from the various fields of biology. The logical development of the subject matter is described in detail in the Introduction. The presentation is divided into three major portions. The first division describes the nature and characteristics of radionuclides, radioactivity detection methods, and various practical considerations in the use of radioisotopes as tracers in biological systems impossibility of completely and adequately treating all the facets of radiotracer methodology in a work of this size. In fact, to attempt to do so would destroy its usefulness as an introductory volume. Clearly then, the approach taken and the topics emphasized are subject to the personal views and background experiences of the authors.

Paperback. Condition: New. How can religion help to understand and contend with the challenges of climate change? Understanding Climate Change through Religious Lifeworld, edited by David Haberman, presents a unique collection of essays that detail how the effects of human-related climate change are actively reshaping religious ideas and practices, even as religious groups and communities endeavor to bring their traditions to bear on mounting climate challenges. People of faith from the low-lying islands of the South Pacific to the glacial regions of the Himalayas are influencing how their communities understand earthly problems and develop meaningful responses to them. This collection focuses on a variety of different aspects of this critical interaction, including the role of religion in ongoing debates about climate change, religious sources of environmental knowledge and how this knowledge informs community responses to climate change, and the ways that climate change is in turn driving religious change. Understanding Climate Change through Religious Lifeworlds offers a transnational view of how religion reconciles the concepts of the global and the local and influences the challenges of climate change.

Alongside contemporaries such as Carl Andre and Donald Judd, Robert Ryman''s radical painting has fundamentally shifted the definitions and boundaries of art. Spanning four decades, this book charts the gradual evolution of consensus about the meaning of his painting. The most significant essays and exhibition reviews have been collated into one volume, including texts written by some of the most influential art historians and critics. . Some essays appear here in English for the first time. With an introductory essay by Vittorio Colaizzi." -- publisher''s statement.
