Dust jacket separated into two pieces by a jagged tear running across front panel with large chip at top left; other small chips, creasing, tears, and toning; dj laid-in…at rear endpapers. Dark blue boards; scuffing at spine ends and board corners. Text block edges toned with leaves slightly affected at margins. Ink signature "Willis J. Baughman" at center of front pastedown and again at center of title page. Upon earning a Ph.D. at Ohio State University, Professor Willis J. Baughman (1914-1992) was hired in December 1942 at the Naval Air Technical Training Center in Chicago where he taught various physical activities (including gymnastics) to Navy aviators in preflight training. In his page v Preface Captain F.T. Ward credits the book's preparation to "the officers in charge of instruction of Gymnastics and Tumbling in Naval Aviation." Ceding to the group attribution the book's text does not credit any specific individuals but it seems likely that Baughman was involved in writing authoring this manual by circumstance of his position and academic background. Baughman stayed with the Navy until 1948 when he accepted a teaching position at the University of Alabama where he remained until his retirement.
