New York: J. H. Sears & Company, 1928. Large folio, approximately 14 5/8 by 16 3/4 inches. Original khaki cloth, gilt-lettered on the front board, in the original dust jacket. pp., followed by 24 full-color mounted plates. A striking oversized collection of World War I images by Claggett Wilson (1887-1952), an American modernist painter and combat veteran. Wilson served as a U.S. Marine officer during the war and developed these powerful watercolor scenes from his experiences in France, including the Champagne sector, Château-Thierry, Bois de Belleau, St. Mihiel, and Rheims. The 24 plates record battlefield assault, wounded soldiers, shellfire, trenches, hospitals, ruined landscapes, and the psychological aftermath of mechanized war. The volume includes appreciations by Alexander Woollcott and Henry McBride. Its full-color mounted plates give it particular importance as a visual document of the Great War and as an example of interwar American art publishing. The Smithsonian American Art Museum holds 23 related Wilson war images, and this book has been shown at the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. The book measures approximately 14 5/8 × 16 3/4 inches and was issued as a deluxe presentation of Wilson's color war images. The pages are archival quality, with a natural cream color. A significant piece of American World War I art, U.S. Marine Corps history, interwar art publishing, and American modernist / expressionist war imagery. Condition Book: Near Fine-. The hardcover volume is unusually well preserved for 1928, with sharp corners, minimal edge and corner wear, a solid square binding, and clean, soft, unmarked pages. There is a small blemish/scratch on the rear cover that seems to line up with the major tear on the dust jacket. There are two small tears at the top of the page with "Attack Developing in the Champagne" (shown in photos). There is mild discoloration around the edges of the pages throughout and occasional faint smudges on the empty areas. Plates: Near Fine-. All 24 color plates are present and in Near Fine condition. The plates are loose rather than securely affixed at the original tipped-in glue points. This appears consistent with age-related failure of original plate adhesive; no tape, amateur repairs, or replacement plates are noted. The prints themselves remain clean and exceptionally attractive. Photographs show the plate condition and arrangement. Dust jacket: Fair. Original dust jacket is present but heavily torn, especially the rear. The front cover has a 4.5" tear beginning in the lower corner at the spine. Wear is heavy throughout the edges on the front cover and another tear is present in the upper corner at the spine. A 3" tear is at the bottom right corner, along the edge. Tears at both the top and bottom of the spine that are significant, but don't stretch up the spine or affect overall integrity. The rear cover has a major tear in the lower corner near the spine, which an owner "fixed" with packing tape. A crease extends all the way across the rear cover, near the top, with small tears in several places. Overall, I'm giving this a rating of fair to be conservative, and because of the visual ugliness of the packing tape fix. That said, the front still presents well and the jacket is structurally sound. Note: I will not be including photos of every flaw on the dust jacket, so I can maximize pictures of the prints, as these are what makes the book special.
